I always knew I would cloth diaper my kids. It just makes sense to me. I was a cloth diapered baby, and so was my brother. Maybe it was that early introduction into cloth diapering that made me want to do it. But the more and more I look into it, the more I know it’s the right choice for us.
I want to start off by saying that maternity leave in Canada is a year. An entire year. If I lived in the USA and only had 3 months off, I might not have made the same decision. I know it’s hard to find day care centres that are into cloth diapering. So this post (like all my posts) is a friendly one. I am not trying to push my decision onto you. I am not saying the disposable diapers are bad. I am just explaining my choice because so many people were wondering.
If you want a run down of all the different cloth diapering systems compared to disposables please see this website.
Most websites agree that diapering one child in disposable diapers from birth to when they are toilet trained costs around $2000-$2500 (using the cheaper disposable diapers). I would like 4 children.
Then I’m going to switch to Bum Genius 4.0, a one sized pocket diaper. I’m also going to use cloth wipes. I bought them at the dollar store, they were 4 for $1. I will hang a wet bag on the side of my change table and throw the dirty diapers and wipes in there. For poopy diapers I will rinse them off with a diaper sprayer. Not that I NEED to. Breast fed poop is 100% water soluble and you can throw it right in your washer.
So I might do an extra load of laundry every day or two. Not a huge deal to me. We have a high efficiency washer and dryer. I just have to dump the wet bag into the washer and be done with it. Easy.
I will have to stuff the pocket of the diaper with an insert, but that doesn’t seem overwhelming to me! I would probably do it when I was folding laundry.
And that’s about it. Any questions? Please be kind.
