I have been cloth diapering for 2 months now and I can honestly say I love every minute of it.
Pictured in a Bum Genius 4.0
– 6 Bum Genius 4.0 pocket diapers (snap)
– 6 Bum Genius 4.0 pocket diapers (Velcro)
– 3 Mother Ease fitted diapers
– 2 Wee Ones by JaJoC prefold diapers
– 1 Apple Cheeks pocket diaper
– 18 cloth wipes (mostly baby wash cloths from the 1$ store)
– 2 spray bottles bottom cleanser (1 is apple cheeks, 1 is bum genius)
– 2 Wahmies pail liners
– 1 super cheap garbage can
– Rockin Green detergent
– spray bottom with cleanser then wipe with cloth wipe
– throw wipe and diaper in garbage can
– when my diaper stash is getting low, I take the pail liner and diapers to the laundry room and dump the liner out into the washing machine, throwing the liner in too
– I wash once in just cold water (it’s basically a pre wash but my washer doesn’t have that option so I do a “short wash” without detergent)
– Then I wash in hot with a cold rinse
– I dry the inserts, prefold and fitteds on high heat
– I hang the liners and covers up outside or dry on low heat
– I wash every other day.
How do I feel about it?
Bum Genius 4.0 (One Sized Pocket diapers): I LOVE them. I have 6 with snaps and 6 velcro. I only bought the velcro because they were half price but now I love them. They are awesome for the middle of the night when you are barely awake. They come with 2 inserts, a newborn one and a normal. I only use the normal one and we have had no leaks (even after a 12 hour stretch in the same diaper!). When Henry is older I will probably use both inserts at the same time, but so far we haven’t had to.
Apple cheeks diaper (pocket): I also love this one and I want more. Apple cheeks doesn’t make a one sized diaper, they only make 2 sizes. Size 1 is supposed to fit until 20 pounds and size 2 starts at 18 pounds. Since Henry is already 15 pounds, I’m going to wait and order the size 2 diapers. Maybe 6? Maybe less since they run about $30 each! CRAZY. But I do love the one I have because it doesn’t leak and is less bulky than the 1 sized BG diapers.
Wee Ones: They are just a cover and an insert. I don’t love them. The leg openings have gussets and they do not fit Henry’s legs well at all! They are also a one sized diaper so maybe when Henry is bigger they will fit differently and I will like them better. I have had this diaper leak once, and it was poop, out the leg hole. It was the ONLY time I’ve had a leak in cloth diapers so far. I only use them when I’m washing my other diapers. Either way it’s nice to have a few spares.
I took it sideways to show the silly leg gusset. It’s not very elastic-y…..
Mother EaseDiapers: They are cloth diapers that snap, but you need a cover too. I haven’t have them leak at all but they are really bulky because the diaper snaps together at the front and so does the cover. So there are 4 layers of material in the front. Again, I usually only use them when my other diapers are in the wash. I’m glad I have them as spares and I haven’t had them leak.
It’s basically a towel that snaps up. Cover not pictured.
Rockin Green detergent: I love it. My diapers don’t smell at all and though they sometimes get poop stains, a few minutes out in the sun bleaches them out without a problem. When we went on vacation I forgot the detergent at home! I can’t find Rockin Green in stores here so I went and bought Arm and Hammer Essentials. It also worked really well and was SO CHEAP. I think I might switch to Arm and Hammer once I use up all my Rockin Green
I also use cloth wipes. I bought baby wash clothes at the dollar store and that’s all I’m using. I bought bum genius bottom cleanser spray and an apple cheeks one. I honestly only bought them for the bottles. I’m going to make my own solution once I empty the bottles that I have. All you do is add water, baby shampoo and some olive oil (or essential oil). SO EASY! Why pay?
I have 2Wahmies diaper pail liners. I went to K mart and bought the cheapest garbage can I could find. I would recommend one with a step opener so you don’t get poop all over the place. So I throw the diapers and wipes in the garbage can and when I do laundry I just turn the liner inside out into the washing machine and throw everything in (including the liner bag).
Important to note:
Henry had a diaper rash from when he was about 2 weeks old until I started with cloth diapers. Within 2 days of cloth diapering the rash was GONE. And I don’t use cream with my cloth diapers. Once we were at church and I had forgotten to bring a cloth diaper. I borrowed a disposable and the next day Henry had a rash again. For this reason ALONE I will never go back to disposable diapers.
I love talking about cloth diapers so if anyone has any questions or suggestions, I would love if you commented.
