Henry’s almost 5, William is 3 and Tilly is 18 months. This was a lazy weekday.
5:36 am: William comes into my room whispering something I don’t understand. I take him back to his room where he explains that Henry is in his SPOT. So I move Henry over and William climbs back into bed and goes back to sleep. I head back to bed planning to go back to sleep too but I can’t. John is getting ready for work and asking me questions so at 6 I just accept that I’m awake and decide to check the weather and then read some of my book instead of being grumpy about it. Quiet time in the morning? I will take it!
6:45am I decide to shower since all the kids are still sleeping but Tilly wakes up just then. I bring her into the bathroom and she requests the toy helicopter to play with. Perfect. Time for a shower.
7:10am and I’m out of the shower. No sign of the boys yet which really surprises me since their clock is set for 7am. I get dressed and then start blow drying my hair (Note: I hardly ever blow dry my hair on a weekday if we have no plans but I just had it cut the day before and I was eager to style it myself). The boys show up during this time and tell me the sun is on their clock. I turn on Disney Junior for them while I finish getting ready. I get the kids all dressed, and make their beds before we head downstairs. Henry wants to be the FIRST kid at preschool today so he’s being a big helper which I really appreciate.
8:05am and we’re eating scrambled eggs and toast (they had an orange each while they were waiting). I make Henry’s snack for school, pack his backpack with his snow clothes and then get the kid’s antibiotics ready. We all had Strep throat last week but Henry and I are done our drugs while the little kids still have more.
8:30am I’m thankful it’s a “warm” winter day today so we don’t need mitts and hats. We get our coat and boots on and walk to preschool. We are the first ones there and Henry is really happy about it. When his teacher unlocks the door he gives all of us a hug and a kiss and then runs in. Easy drop-off? THANK YOU. But then as I’m smiling and loving the day, I try to put Tilly in her stroller and she freaks out, arching her back and screaming at me. I strap her down and where is William? Oh halfway home already. So off I RUN to catch up. Geeeeeez kids.
Home just before 9am and I ask if the kids want to stay outside for a few minutes. They do and within 1 minute they both decided to touch the snow without mitts on and are crying about it being cold. William keeps saying “But it’s a warm day, why is the snow cold?”. Looks like we need to have a science chat. We go inside and William starts playing the piano and Tilly is just losing it over and over again. She must be tired? I don’t know! I distract her with laundry. She loves to watch it wash. We put a new load in and take the load out of the drier from yesterday. I make a tea and start folding and Tilly decides to climb inside the basket. As long as she’s happy I’m Ok with it.
10am I’m done folding and Tilly is wrestling with William. Then it turns and Tilly ends up crying. More cuddles to make it all better. I put on Frozen at William’s request and run upstairs to get my book since Tilly just wants to cuddle and watch the movie.
11am ish We start getting ready to pick up Henry from preschool. William doesn’t want to go in the stroller, he wants to run. So off we go. We pick him up and get back home without any incidences. Tilly runs right to the fridge so I heat up the home made mac and cheese for lunch quick. William doesn’t want it so I eat his. When they are done I take Tilly upstairs, change her diaper, sing 2 songs in her rocking chair and then rock her to sleep while listening to a podcast. Today I chose a parenting one. She’s asleep in seconds and I didn’t even get past the intro of my podcast. I knew she was tired!
Noon I go back downstairs and Henry asks to play with the Lincoln Log building that John built the night before for him. I bring it down and surprisingly William and Henry play with it together for an HOUR. Seriously an entire hour! I emptied and reloaded the dishwasher, cleaned up the kitchen and switched around the laundry. William then asks for popcorn and Henry does too. I look over and noticed someone (cough William cough) dumped the remaining Lincoln Logs all over the floor. So I tell them they can have popcorn if they clean up that mess. William just plain hides but Henry puts in a good effort so I go to help him, telling William that if he doesn’t also help, Henry and I will get all the popcorn. He loses it. Like on the floor tantrum. “I DON’T WANT TO AT ALL MOM, AT ALL” Insert eye roll but I’m trying to acknowledge emotion and so I start with the “I can see that you are angry. You don’t want to clean up the mess, you just want popcorn” and that’s all I say. And he cries for a while but then calms down and throws a few Lincoln logs in the bin so I consider it a win. Popcorn for all!
2pm Tilly is awake. Pretty sure she smelt the popcorn since she is a popcorn monster. I bring her down and put her right in her high chair. She is very excited about the popcorn. I tidy up that mess when everyone is done and then remember to give the second dose of antibiotics. Henry asks if they can watch Paddington Bear and I agree so I turn it on for them. I sweep the floor and Tilly helps. I’m glad when she gets distracted so I can re-do it.
3pm: I’m starving. I cut up an apple and dip it in PB with unsweetened coconut sprinkled on top. Tilly shares. I then start typing up this post and Tilly is in and out of my lap a hundred times over. John texts to say he’s bringing leftovers from his Italian Feast at work and all I need to do is put some water on. Sounds good to me!
4pm: John’s home! All the kids and the dog run to the front door to greet him. He brings in the leftover food to me and I do a happy dance. I couldn’t put water on to boil before because he took all our pots to work for the feast. So I start cooking some new noodles for all the sauces he brought home (plus fresh bread! YUM). We eat around 5pm and then chat for a while. At 6pm I head upstairs to get ready for my Card Club. After trying on a bunch of clothes I put on the exact same thing I was wearing all day and use a baby wipe to spot clean it. Yes. It happened.
6:30pm I call everyone upstairs. I take the boys and John takes Tilly and we start the bedtime routine. Teeth brushed, potty time, PJs, books, prayers, lights out. I leave the boys room and I can hear Tilly giving John a hard time. I want so badly to go into her room but I have to leave now. I bundle up and walk over to my neighbour’s house where Card Club is.
7-9:30pm Card Club! We are done making cards pretty early tonight but stay chatting and drinking wine. It’s so lovely and I always look forward to it.
9:30pm When I get home John is asleep on the couch with baby Tilly. I send him to bed and turn on Gilmore Girls. I watch one episode and start nodding off during the second one. So I pick up Tilly and we go up to bed. I think about putting her in her crib but decided to just bring her into our bed since she’s bound to wake up sometime soon.
11ish: I wash my face, brush my teeth and get my PJs on. Now totally wide awake (this is always the case). So I get my book and read a few pages before getting sleepy again. Lights out!
2am: I’m awake but Tilly is still sleeping. Did she wake me? Did I wake myself? Back to sleep I go. Far too tired to really think about it.
7am: William comes into our room, and exclaims “The sun is on my Clock! Let’s go downstairs!” and so begins another day.
