We’ve been keeping busy with the never ending to-do list of house ownership.
1)Dining Room Chairs
About a million years ago my boys destroyed all our dining room chairs. A few spots were wearing thin and they decided to stick their fingers in these spots and rip. I put all the chairs in the basement and borrowed some folding chairs from the church temporarily….which lasted at least 6 months but maybe even longer. I don’t even remember! So with John’s encouragement I finally got to recovering our chairs this past spring. While I was at it, I did our bar stools too.
2) New Dishwasher
Our old black Bosh dishwasher started to break. It progressively got louder, and then only the pots and pans cycle would work. Our good friend works for Miele and he came to look at it for us. He said it was likely electrical in nature and would be costly to repair. So we decided we would just use it until it broke and then get a new one. Fast forward a few months and he finds us a barely used (office kitchen) Miele Dishwasher for super cheap! We seem to be replacing appliances about once a year for the last 3ish years. It’s good for the budget, but our last remaining black kitchen appliance (the stove) is looking lonely. But seriously, look how pretty this dishwasher is! (please note that within 5 minutes of cleaning it, it is covered in finger prints-that’s real life)
3)Master and Kids Bathroom Floors.
Ever since Henry started using the potty, we’ve had problems with our cloth diaper sprayer. I guess he would play with the on/off lever when he was going potty. If left on, it would drip onto the floor even if the spray button wasn’t being pressed. I usually checked to make sure it was off, but as he got more independent, I kinda forgot about it. One day at bath time I noticed the baseboard behind the toilet was soaked! Like I pressed it and water ran out. Turns out the diaper sprayer was left on and was leaking for a LONG while and no one noticed! So we took the baseboard off and the dry wall was wet, and then John thought he better pull up the floor too. WHAT A DISASTER. So we locked that bathroom door and let it dry out for, oh something like 4 months. John used some vacation time from work to re-tile it. We went with a luxury vinyl and we love it! And then since we wanted them to match, we also re-did our master bathroom floor. We tossed the diaper sprayer out too.
4) Main Floor Powder Room
This is still in process: Because our basement flooding and the diaper sprayer leak upstairs wasn’t enough water damage in our lives, the powder room toilet started to leak out the bottom. At first we just thought it was Henry peeing on the floor. Then we noticed it was clean water. So we thought it was the kids spraying tap water all over the place. Then after I cleaned the heck out of that room one night, I placed paper towel all over the floor and in the morning the paper towel behind and beside the toilet was wet. We tried just replacing the wax ring, but turns out the whole toilet needed replacing, and oh, the plumbing was done wrong so John had to change it. The baseboards were swollen so they also needed to be removed and replaced. So we do have a new toilet, but we haven’t gotten around to adding the trim yet.
5) Painting the Main Floor
Remember back in November when I started painting the main floor? I predicted it would take us a month to do it slowly? HA! I’m still slowly working at it. I finally started into the kitchen and did 1.5 walls. I really need to just buckle down and DO IT.
